Meet Charlie McKeown
Charlie was an advocate before he became a lawyer. As a college student in Chicago, he volunteered with the Reparations Ordinance campaign, which won compensation for more than 125 survivors of Chicago police torture. From there, he joined a local prisoner support organization, where he corresponded with Illinois prisoners and coordinated housing and re-entry services upon their release.
After graduating from DePaul University in 2015, Charlie volunteered with the Chicago Community Bond Fund. There, he used community donations to pay bond for hundreds of Chicagoans who were legally innocent but could not afford their pre-trial freedom. Through this role he also campaigned for the Pre-Trial Fairness Act, which abolished the use of cash bail in Illinois.
These experiences drove Charlie to law school. He earned his J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he was the president of the National Lawyers Guild student chapter and a participant in the Criminal Defense clinic. Charlie received the Clinical Legal Education Association (CLEA) award for Outstanding Clinic Student for his work as a public defense intern. He also received the National Lawyer Guild’s C.B. King Award, awarded nationally to one law student for upholding human rights and environmental justice.
Charlie began his career as a public defender in the Northern Judicial Circuit of Georgia before joining Swingle & Levin in 2025. He is a graduate of the Bill Daniel Trial Advocacy Program and the National Criminal Defense College Trial Practice Institute. He lives in Winterville, GA with his wife and son.
